ATHLETES IN TANDEM
Damien Lopez Alphonso lost both his arms when he was 12 years old after being struck with 13,000 volts of electricity. What would have broken most, pushed Damien to become a world-class Paralympic cyclist. After decades of competing around the world, bad luck struck again when he was hit by a bus while training in his hometown of Havana, Cuba. In losing his leg he lost not only his ability to compete but also his independence. With the help of a Colorado based non-profit, Athletes in Tandem, Damien has his eyes set yet again on the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo. We have been documenting his journey in Cuba and the U.S. as he pushes himself to compete on the ultimate stage.
